Bleeding Mark is a settlement in Horizon Forbidden West.
Description
The settlement is built in a field of derelict Old World mining machinery. Similar to the other Desert settlements, the inhabitants rely on the Old World structures as foundations for their housing.
The adjacent mine, dubbed the Gouge, contains supplies of ashblood (the Tenakth term for cinnabar), which the Desert Clan uses in pigments. As such, the settlement will trade ashblood to Scalding Spear in exchange for water rations.
History
In the Old World
During the time of the Old Ones, the area that would become Bleeding Mark was a cinnabar mine in western Nevada that was shut down due to excessive mercury concentrations. An attempt was made to illegally reopen the mine under the pretense of fraudulent data of its safety, but an environmental activist group with an inside operative in the mining outfit exposed the fraud.[1][2]
In the New World

After the reintroduction of humanity, the area fell under the control of the Desert Tenakth and was named Bleeding Mark, with the mine named the Gouge.
Horizon Forbidden West
Historically, Bleeding Mark was as arid as the rest of the Desert Clan's territory. However, the rampancy of AETHER resulted in increased rainfall within the region. Rather than providing the settlement additional water to supplement their limited supply, the rain came down in destructive storms and was contaminated. One such storm led to a mudslide that flooded the village, which was drained away into the Gouge.[3]
