- "Tell her... it's worth it."
- ―Atral's last words[1]
Atral is a minor character in Horizon Zero Dawn.
History
Background
Atral grew up in Brightmarket. As a child, he became friends with a girl named Elida, often dumping worms down her back as she planted in the garden, much to her annoyance.[2]
During the Liberation, Atral defected to the Shadow Carja and was stationed at the Citadel and Kestrel's Perch, separating him from Elida. Sometime after the ceasefire, Atral and Elida found one another on the island from their childhood, where they played together like they had as children. The two began meeting in secret, talking for hours and working together to plant a garden there. Their relationship eventually blossomed into a forbidden romance due to their positions on opposite sides of the Carja Civil War. When it was safe for the two of them to meet, Atral would signal Elida by campfire, which she would see via the telescope in her garden. At some point, Atral gave Elida a lock while he kept the key, stating that their lives were locked together.[2]
Horizon Zero Dawn
One night, Atral signaled to Elida,[2] planning to ask her to leave to the outlands with him. However, he was spotted by some of the other soldiers and captured, taken back to Kestrel's Perch to be interrogated. When he refused to talk, they resorted to torturing him, including cutting off one of his fingers. Despite the suffering, he didn't break.[1]
When Aloy arrived on Elida's request to find Atral, she killed his captors and approached Atral, who was near death. In his last words, he told Aloy that Elida is safe, he never told them about her or their island. He asked Aloy to give Elida the key and to tell her that it is worth it before passing from his injuries.[1]
Post-Mortem
Aloy gave the key to Elida, as well as passed on the message, although she misspoke, stating that Atral said "it was worth it", rather than "it is worth it." While thankful for Aloy's efforts, Elida disagreed with the message, stating that it isn't worth it. Aloy admitted her mistake and encouraged Elida to go on, to which she agreed to try.[1]
Elida later traveled to Meridian Village to help prepare for the attack from the Eclipse, helping to dig battlements, collect herbs and anything else that could make a difference, doing it for Atral.[3]
